An AI paralegal reads contracts and legal documents, pulls out the key terms, flags unusual or risky clauses and drafts first versions. It speeds up the reading; it does not give legal advice. At OWL & GOATS this specialist is AEGIS, and a person reviews everything, with your lawyer taking every legal decision.
What does an AI paralegal do?
- Summarises documents: parties, dates, obligations, payment terms, renewal and termination in plain words.
- Compares against your standards: checks each clause against the positions you normally accept and flags what is missing or different.
- Flags risk: automatic renewals, uncapped liability, one-sided indemnities, unusual exclusivity, each with a short note.
- Drafts first versions: suggested redlines, standard agreements from your templates, policy and terms drafts.
- Keeps a register: which contract renews when, who signed what, which obligations are due.
What it must never do alone
An AI paralegal is a strong assistant and a poor oracle. It does not know your relationship with the other party, your appetite for risk or the specific rules of every jurisdiction. It can miss a problem in unusual wording or in a document that refers to other documents it has not seen.
So the rules are strict: its output is a first pass, never advice; every flag is checked by a person; high-risk points go to your lawyer before signature; it never negotiates or sends anything to the other side. Treat its flags as leads to check, not verdicts.
Confidentiality matters just as much. Contracts contain prices, names and terms your partners expect you to protect. Access to documents is limited to the review itself, every action is logged, and your documents are never used to train public models. If a document is too sensitive to share, we can work from your clause library and redacted copies instead.
Where does it save the most time?
On volume and repetition. Teams that review many similar documents, such as vendor agreements, NDAs, client contracts and leases, spend most of their time finding the clauses that matter. The assistant does that reading in minutes and hands over a clear list, so people spend their time on judgment.
It also helps with consistency. Every contract is checked against the same standards, and the register shows renewals and obligations before they become surprises. That is useful even for small companies that do not have an in-house lawyer.
It shortens the back-and-forth with your lawyer as well. Instead of sending a forty-page agreement with the question “is this fine?”, you send the three clauses that differ from your standard, with the exact wording and a note on why they matter. Your lawyer’s time goes to judgment, which is what you pay for.
How to get good results from it
- Write down your standards. The positions you accept, the ones you refuse, and the ones you negotiate. The clearer the standard, the more useful the flags.
- Set a firm rule that high-risk flags always go to a person, and to your lawyer before signature.
- Feed corrections back. When a flag was wrong or something was missed, update the standards so the next review is better.
- Keep documents in one place, with the signed versions, so the register stays reliable.
A typical review, step by step
1. Intake. The document arrives with a short note: who the other party is, what the deal is, and what worries you. Without that context even a good reviewer misses what matters.
2. Structure. The assistant reads the whole document, including annexes and defined terms, and maps it: which clause covers payment, liability, termination, confidentiality, data and disputes.
3. Comparison. Each clause is compared with your standard. The result is a short table: matches, differs, missing, with the exact wording quoted rather than paraphrased.
4. Notes and drafts. Every difference gets a plain-language note and, where useful, suggested wording you can accept, edit or reject.
5. Human review. A person checks the summary against the document, removes false alarms and adds context. High-risk points are marked for your lawyer.
6. Register. Dates, renewals and obligations go into the contract register, so nobody has to remember them.
How OWL & GOATS does it
AEGIS is our legal review specialist. It prepares summaries, flags and drafts; a person on our side checks every output, and anything with legal consequences goes to your lawyer. We are not a law firm and do not give legal opinions. What we provide is the preparation that makes your lawyer’s time count, plus the documentation many companies now need for the EU AI Act and client security questionnaires.
A first project, for example a review of your standard contracts against a clause library and a renewal register, can be a fixed price from $2,500 (12,900 MAD in Morocco), 2–3 weeks. We work in English, French and Arabic, which helps when your contracts mix languages.
AI paralegal, a hire, or a law firm?
- A law firm for advice, negotiations, disputes and anything where a legal opinion is required.
- An in-house hire when legal work is daily and needs someone who knows the business deeply.
- An AI paralegal with our team when you have a steady flow of documents to read, compare and track, and you want your lawyer to see only what needs a lawyer.
